How to Maintain Your Driveway After Professional Cleaning

    20 December 20244 min read

You've invested in a professional driveway clean and the results are stunning — the original colour is back, the weeds are gone and your property looks transformed. Now you want to keep it that way.

Here are our tried-and-tested maintenance tips from over 20 years of cleaning driveways across London and Surrey.

Regular Sweeping Makes a Big Difference

It sounds simple, but sweeping your driveway every 1–2 weeks prevents organic debris from accumulating. Leaves, soil and seeds provide nutrients for moss, algae and weeds. Remove them before they establish.

A stiff outdoor broom is all you need. Focus on edges, corners and any areas where debris naturally collects.

    Treat Weeds Early

Don't wait for weeds to mature. As soon as you spot green shoots between paving joints, treat them with a path and patio weed killer. Once weeds develop deep root systems, they're harder to remove and can displace jointing sand.

    Address Oil and Stains Quickly

Oil, rust, paint and other stains are far easier to remove when fresh. For oil spills:

    • Absorb excess oil with cat litter or sand immediately
    • Apply a degreaser or washing-up liquid
    • Scrub with a stiff brush and rinse

For stubborn stains that don't respond to home treatment, our pressure washing service can remove virtually anything from hard surfaces.

    Re-Sand Block Paving Joints

If your driveway is block paving, the kiln-dried sand between blocks gradually washes out over time. This allows weed growth and can cause blocks to shift. Top up with kiln-dried jointing sand annually — simply sweep it into the joints on a dry day.

For longer-lasting results, consider polymeric sand which hardens when wet and resists washout.

    Consider Sealing

A quality sealant applied after professional cleaning provides excellent long-term protection. Sealants:

    • Inhibit weed and moss growth
    • Resist oil and stain penetration
    • Enhance the colour of block paving and natural stone
    • Make future cleaning easier and faster

We offer professional sealing as an add-on to our driveway cleaning service. Ask us for details when you book your clean.

When to Book Your Next Professional Clean

With good maintenance, a professionally cleaned driveway should stay in excellent condition for 2–3 years before needing another deep clean. Properties with heavy tree coverage or in shaded locations (common in New Malden and Chessington) may need cleaning sooner.
